The bench press is a three part movement. This may seem silly at first, but think about it this way. First you have the descent, the stretch of your pectorals, second you have the initial push, the engagement of the pecs, and third you have the finish, the engagement and contraction of your triceps. Three parts, two parts that really engage your muscles, and one part that is primarily your weakness.
For the hallway, this is practical since it provides the much needed perch, allowing you to take off the shoes, bigger boots, muddy willies and many more things. Children can take off their shoes right before entering the home without moving around the home with dirty shoes.
Benches are not good or bad just based on size, but the bench should be large enough for your own needs. If more than two people will sit on it at a time, it should be at least 5 feet long. The seat shouldn't be too low to the ground which is a frequent problem with DIY benches.
